Trimble has received many honors both as a historian, writer and performer. In , the governor of Arizona appointed him Official State Historian. In he was named a Charter Member of the Arizona Culturekeepers. He was also inducted into the Scottsdale Hall of Fame. After a stint with the Marines and graduating from Arizona State University in , he embraced the folk-music boom of the early s. He played guitar and cut records with his group, the Gin Mill Three, and worked the bars and coffeehouses of the Southwestern hootenanny circuit.

His passions merged later in the decade after he was hired to teach American history at Coronado High School. Trimble was disappointed to discover that most history textbooks at the time focused on the East while giving short shrift to the West. He started to put such an emphasis on Western history in his classes that school administrators finally offered him the opportunity to write the curriculum for a one-semester course in Southwest history. They told him he had to get 35 students to take the class.

About did, he recalled, and he taught the class from to By the time he stopped teaching regularly to focus on Arizona's centennial, his class was charting the region's evolution from prehistoric times to the 21st century.

Kevin Schirmer, who became Trimble's friend after taking his class at Coronado in the mids and now acts as his booking agent, said it's no exaggeration to say that Trimble often made his classes erupt with laughter.

He wasn't trying to be pretentious or anything, but he obviously was very passionate about what he was teaching. It was his favorite subject; he loves Arizona. Trimble doesn't rule out writing more books, though he said his emphasis today is more on live performances than writing.

Still, he said he always brings a box of the books to his personal appearances, and they still sell briskly. As with his teaching style, Trimble notes that his books always were intended to be accessible to mainstream readers and were not necessarily written for scholars.
